Full Description
Coastal Evergreen Pack is a tough, wind-resistant hedging mix designed specifically for exposed coastal locations. Selected for its ability to tolerate salt spray, strong winds, and poorer soils, this pack provides reliable year-round screening and structure where standard hedging often struggles. Varieties included – equal split (33.3% each): Holm Oak ( Quercus ilex ) – A hardy evergreen with leathery foliage, exceptionally tolerant of coastal exposure and salt-laden winds. Provides long-term structure and shelter. Elaeagnus ( Elaeagnus Γ— ebbingei ) – A fast-growing, resilient evergreen with attractive silvery foliage, ideal for rapid screening and excellent wind resistance. Griselinia ( Griselinia littoralis ) – A classic coastal hedge plant, valued for its dense, glossy green leaves and strong performance in maritime conditions. This mix is ideal for seaside gardens, coastal boundaries, and exposed sites where durability, evergreen cover, and low maintenance are essential.

Coastal Evergreen Pack is a robust, wind-tolerant hedging mix specifically designed for challenging coastal environments. This pack combines proven evergreen species that thrive in salt-laden air, strong winds, and free-draining or nutrient-poor soils, delivering reliable year-round screening where more delicate hedging often fails.

The selected varieties establish into a dense, resilient hedge that provides shelter, privacy, and visual structure throughout all seasons. Each species has been chosen for its coastal performance, durability, and ability to knit together into a cohesive hedge while remaining manageable with routine trimming. Varieties included – equal split (33.3% each): Holm Oak (Quercus ilex) A highly resilient evergreen native to coastal and Mediterranean regions, Holm Oak is exceptionally tolerant of wind, salt spray, and exposure. Its tough, leathery leaves reduce moisture loss and resist scorching, making it a dependable long-term structural component within coastal hedges. Over time, it provides excellent shelter and wind buffering. Elaeagnus (Elaeagnus Γ— ebbingei) Elaeagnus offers fast establishment and strong coastal performance, with thick, silvery-green foliage that reflects light and resists wind damage. It is particularly effective at providing rapid screening while the hedge matures and performs well in poor or sandy soils common in coastal locations. Griselinia (Griselinia littoralis) A classic coastal hedging plant, Griselinia is valued for its dense, glossy evergreen foliage and strong tolerance of maritime conditions. It responds well to trimming, helping maintain a neat, compact hedge while contributing softness and consistent green colour year-round. When planted as a mixed evergreen hedge, this combination delivers excellent wind resistance, salt tolerance, and longevity. The varied foliage textures help reduce wind tunnelling and improve hedge resilience, making it particularly suitable for seaside gardens, coastal properties, and exposed rural boundaries. This pack is ideal for customers seeking a dependable evergreen hedge for harsh coastal environments, offering low-maintenance performance, strong visual impact, and reliable year-round coverage in conditions where standard hedging plants often struggle.
Planting and care

Choose a position in full sun. Use freely draining soil and avoid leaving roots in standing water.

Water thoroughly after planting and check soil moisture regularly during establishment, particularly in dry or windy weather. Keep competing weeds clear and avoid piling mulch against stems.

Check the individual plants in the pack before positioning them. Match pruning and any winter protection to each supplied species; use the full plant list and substitution notes on this page.

Delivery and unpacking

On arrival, carefully remove outer packaging and check the plants against your order. Handle plants by their pot or root ball where possible, rather than pulling on stems or branches.

Check root moisture and water if needed. Until planting, keep the plants upright in a sheltered position and prevent roots from drying out. If supplied bare-root, keep the roots covered and moist and plant promptly when conditions allow.

Delivery arrangements and any charges are those confirmed for your order.

Important information

The holm oak in this mix can cause serious poisoning when animals eat substantial amounts of acorns or leaves. Keep horses and pets from gorging on fallen acorns and keep pruning waste out of animal feed. Hard acorns can also cause choking or obstruction.

Hardiness is a conservative estimate for the whole mix (H4), based on its least cold-hardy listed plant. Individual plants may be hardier; site, drainage and establishment affect winter survival.
