Full Description
Paddock Boundary Hedging – A native mix for protected planting along paddock and field boundaries. Plant outside suitable livestock fencing so animals cannot reach the foliage, fallen fruit or clippings. This mix is not suitable as animal feed. Equal split (20% each): Hawthorn ( Crataegus monogyna ), Blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa ), Elder ( Sambucus nigra ), Hazel ( Corylus avellana ), Dog Rose ( Rosa canina ). Countryside Stewardship: Suitable for BN7 & BN11 claims when selecting the 30–50cm or 50–70cm bare-root options.

Paddock Boundary Hedging is a traditional native mix for protected planting along rural field and paddock boundaries. It can develop into a dense hedge for shelter and long-term structure, but it must remain outside suitable livestock fencing and must not be treated as feed.

The combination creates a hedge that thickens from the base upwards. Suitable fencing must keep animals away from the plants during establishment and as the hedge matures. All species are native and respond to regular hedge management once established.

Livestock safety

This boundary-hedge mix contains blackthorn and elder and should not be used as livestock feed. Prevent horses and other grazing animals from eating blackthorn foliage, especially damaged or wilted cuttings, and keep elder leaves and stems out of reach. Fence the planting where needed and remove hedge clippings from paddocks.

Varieties included – equal split (20% each): Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) forms the backbone of this mix and is the most widely used hedgerow plant in livestock landscapes. Its thorny structure creates a natural barrier, while its dense growth habit helps the hedge knit together over time. Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) adds dense, spiny branching, particularly at the base of the hedge. Keep its foliage and cuttings away from grazing animals; thorns are also an injury hazard. The hedge is not a substitute for suitable livestock fencing. Elder (Sambucus nigra) brings faster early establishment and fills space quickly in the first few seasons. It supports wildlife and helps the hedge develop volume while slower-growing species mature. Hazel (Corylus avellana) contributes long-term strength and structure. It responds well to hedge management and coppicing, helping to maintain a thick, manageable hedge suitable for agricultural use. Dog Rose (Rosa canina) weaves through the hedge, naturally reinforcing gaps and edges. Its arching habit adds complexity and additional deterrence while increasing biodiversity value. Countryside Stewardship BN7 & BN11 All species within this pack meet the published planting specification for Countryside Stewardship BN7 (Gapping-up) and BN11 (New Hedging). When planted as a mixed native hedge using appropriate spacing and protection, this combination aligns with traditional countryside hedge character expected by inspectors. Grant eligibility applies specifically to the 30–50cm and 50–70cm bare-root options. Larger sizes, pot-grown plants, or alternative root formats fall outside standard grant specifications and should be treated as non-grant planting. This pack is intended for land managers restoring native hedgerows or creating protected rural boundaries. Maintain suitable fencing so livestock cannot browse the hedge, and collect all pruning waste before animals return to nearby areas.
Planting and care

Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Keep the soil moist while allowing excess water to drain freely.

Water thoroughly after planting and check soil moisture regularly during establishment, particularly in dry or windy weather. Keep competing weeds clear and avoid piling mulch against stems.

Check the individual plants in the pack before positioning them. Match pruning and any winter protection to each supplied species; use the full plant list and substitution notes on this page.

Plant and maintain the hedge outside suitable livestock fencing. Keep animals away from the foliage and fallen fruit, and remove all hedge clippings from nearby paddocks before allowing grazing. Do not feed this mix or its pruning waste to livestock.

Delivery and unpacking

On arrival, carefully remove outer packaging and check the plants against your order. Handle plants by their pot or root ball where possible, rather than pulling on stems or branches.

Check root moisture and water if needed. Until planting, keep the plants upright in a sheltered position and prevent roots from drying out. If supplied bare-root, keep the roots covered and moist and plant promptly when conditions allow.

Delivery arrangements and any charges are those confirmed for your order.

Important information

This boundary-hedge mix contains blackthorn and elder and should not be used as livestock feed. Prevent horses and other grazing animals from eating blackthorn foliage, especially damaged or wilted cuttings, and keep elder leaves and stems out of reach. Fence the planting where needed and remove hedge clippings from paddocks.

Take care around the thorny stems. Keep the plant material away from children and pets.

Hardiness is a conservative estimate for the whole mix (H6), based on its least cold-hardy listed plant. Individual plants may be hardier; site, drainage and establishment affect winter survival.
