Full Description
Wet Soil Hedging Pack is a native, strong hedging pack particularly well performing in wetter or low-lying sites. This pack combines berry-producing shrubs with moisture-loving native species to create a natural, biodiverse boundary that thrives where soils remain damp or seasonally waterlogged. The mix establishes into a varied hedge with early pollen sources, dense cover, and autumn food value, making it ideal for countryside planting, habitat creation, and grant-eligible environmental schemes. Varieties included – equal split: Alder ( Alnus glutinosa ) Guelder Rose ( Viburnum opulus ) Goat Willow ( Salix caprea ) White Willow ( Salix alba ) – planted as occasional hedgerow standards

Wet Soil Hedging Pack is a native hedgerow mix specifically designed create a strong hedgerow while thriving in damp, low-lying, and moisture-retentive soils. This pack is well suited to river valleys, floodplains, heavy clay ground, and upland regions where traditional hedging species can struggle, including areas such as the Lake District and western counties.

The combination of shrubs and small trees creates a naturally varied hedge that provides early pollen, dense nesting cover, and reliable autumn and winter food sources. It establishes into a resilient, wildlife-rich boundary that blends seamlessly into countryside landscapes while remaining practical to manage over the long term. Varieties included – equal split: 25% Alder (Alnus glutinosa) forms the structural backbone of this mix. Highly tolerant of waterlogged soils, alder establishes quickly and improves soil conditions through nitrogen fixation. Its dense branching provides shelter and nesting opportunities for birds while contributing long-term height and strength to the hedge. Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus) adds seasonal interest and high wildlife value. Spring flowers support pollinators, while its bright red berries provide an important late-season food source for birds. Its bushy growth habit helps create volume and cover within the hedge. Goat Willow (Salix caprea) is one of the earliest flowering native species, providing vital pollen for insects at the very start of the season. Its fast establishment and soft, spreading habit make it ideal for filling space quickly and offering shelter for nesting birds. White Willow (Salix alba) is included as occasional hedgerow standards rather than a continuous hedge plant. It thrives in wet soils and contributes height, structure, and long-term habitat value, offering roosting and perching opportunities while reinforcing the hedge’s natural character. Countryside Stewardship BN7 & BN11 All species within this pack are native and suitable for use under Countryside Stewardship BN7 (Gapping-up) and BN11 (New Hedging), where wet-soil or riparian planting is appropriate. When planted at the correct spacing with suitable protection, this mix aligns with traditional hedgerow specifications and habitat-focused scheme objectives. Grant eligibility applies specifically to the 30–50cm and 50–70cm bare-root options. Larger sizes, pot-grown plants, or alternative root formats fall outside standard grant specifications and should be treated as non-grant planting. This pack is ideal for land managers, estates, and conservation-focused projects seeking to create or restore bird-friendly hedgerows in challenging soil conditions, while meeting environmental scheme requirements and maintaining a natural, countryside appearance.
Planting and care

Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Moisture-retentive soil is suitable; do not assume this also means the plant can tolerate prolonged flooding.

Water thoroughly after planting and check soil moisture regularly during establishment, particularly in dry or windy weather. Keep competing weeds clear and avoid piling mulch against stems.

Check the individual plants in the pack before positioning them. Match pruning and any winter protection to each supplied species; use the full plant list and substitution notes on this page.

Delivery and unpacking

On arrival, carefully remove outer packaging and check the plants against your order. Handle plants by their pot or root ball where possible, rather than pulling on stems or branches.

Check root moisture and water if needed. Until planting, keep the plants upright in a sheltered position and prevent roots from drying out. If supplied bare-root, keep the roots covered and moist and plant promptly when conditions allow.

Delivery arrangements and any charges are those confirmed for your order.

Important information

The guelder rose in this wet-soil mix has berries and other parts that can cause stomach upset if eaten. Do not let children or pets taste the fruit, and keep clippings out of animal feed. Normal garden contact with the mix is not the same exposure as eating it.

Hardiness is a conservative estimate for the whole mix (H6), based on its least cold-hardy listed plant. Individual plants may be hardier; site, drainage and establishment affect winter survival.
