Full Description
Countryside Stewardship Hedging Pack (BN11 & BN7) is the official Harrod Outdoors core hedging mix, designed specifically to meet Countryside Stewardship scheme requirements. Every species included is fully grant eligible, making this a safe, compliant choice for both BN11 and BN7 options. Varieties included – grant compliant mix: Hawthorn ( Crataegus monogyna ) – The backbone of traditional UK hedgerows, valued for its toughness, stock-proof structure, and exceptional wildlife benefit. Dog Rose ( Rosa canina ) – A native scrambling species that reinforces hedge density while providing flowers and hips for pollinators and birds. Field Maple ( Acer campestre ) – A hardy native tree with excellent tolerance of pruning, adding seasonal interest and long-term structure to mixed hedges. Blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa ) – A dense, thorny native ideal for creating strong, protective boundaries with early spring blossom and autumn sloes. This pack is suitable for farms, estates, land stewardship projects, and rural boundaries, and can be planted with confidence knowing it aligns fully with Countryside Stewardship guidance.

Traditional Native Hedging is a classic bare-root hedging mix designed to recreate and restore authentic British countryside hedgerows. This pack is ideal for rural boundaries, field edges, and hedge restoration projects where traditional species, long-term resilience, and environmental value are required.

This combination of native plants establishes into a dense, stock-aware hedge that thickens from the base upwards. By mixing thorny and structural species, the hedge provides containment, shelter, and long-term definition while remaining well suited to countryside and agricultural settings. All species included are native to the UK and respond well to traditional hedge management once established. Varieties included – equal split (25% each): Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) forms the backbone of this mix and is the most widely used native hedgerow plant in the UK. Its dense, thorny growth habit helps create a strong, stock-proof structure while supporting a wide range of wildlife. Dog Rose (Rosa canina) weaves naturally through the hedge, reinforcing gaps and edges. Its arching stems increase density and deterrence while adding biodiversity value and seasonal interest. Field Maple (Acer campestre) contributes structure and longevity. Traditionally used in managed hedgerows, it responds well to trimming and helps create a stable framework within the hedge over time. Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) adds extra strength and density, particularly at the base of the hedge. Its spiny growth habit makes it especially effective for stock boundaries and long-term hedge resilience. Countryside Stewardship BN7 & BN11 All species within this pack meet the published planting specifications for Countryside Stewardship BN7 (Gapping-up) and BN11 (New Hedging). When planted as a mixed native hedge using correct spacing, protection, and management practices, this combination aligns with traditional countryside hedge character expected by scheme inspectors. Grant eligibility applies specifically to the 30–50cm and 50–70cm bare-root options. Larger sizes, pot-grown plants, or alternative root formats fall outside standard grant specifications and should be treated as non-grant planting. This pack is well suited to land managers, farmers, and estates seeking to restore existing hedgerows, establish new native boundaries, or meet environmental scheme requirements while maintaining practical and durable hedge management.
Planting and care

Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Keep the soil moist while allowing excess water to drain freely.

Water thoroughly after planting and check soil moisture regularly during establishment, particularly in dry or windy weather. Keep competing weeds clear and avoid piling mulch against stems.

Check the individual plants in the pack before positioning them. Match pruning and any winter protection to each supplied species; use the full plant list and substitution notes on this page.

Delivery and unpacking

On arrival, carefully remove outer packaging and check the plants against your order. Handle plants by their pot or root ball where possible, rather than pulling on stems or branches.

Check root moisture and water if needed. Until planting, keep the plants upright in a sheltered position and prevent roots from drying out. If supplied bare-root, keep the roots covered and moist and plant promptly when conditions allow.

Delivery arrangements and any charges are those confirmed for your order.

Important information

This countryside hedge includes blackthorn, whose foliage and chewed or crushed stones are unsuitable for consumption. Keep clippings out of paddocks and animal feed. Hawthorn, blackthorn and rose prickles need careful handling and should not be left in play or animal areas.

Hardiness is a conservative estimate for the whole mix (H6), based on its least cold-hardy listed plant. Individual plants may be hardier; site, drainage and establishment affect winter survival.
