Full Description

Japanese Zelkova (Zelkova serrata) is a graceful, medium to large deciduous tree with a broad, rounded crown and upright branching, prized for its resilience, autumn colour, and architectural form. Though native to East Asia, it performs exceptionally well in the UK climate and is increasingly used as a substitute for elm in urban and rural settings due to its high resistance to Dutch elm disease. Grown as a full standard tree , it provides clear stem height suited to structured gardens, parklands, streetscapes, and large residential designs. With its flaking grey bark, finely serrated green foliage that turns rich orange-red in autumn, and excellent tolerance to pollution, wind, and varied soils, it’s an elegant, low-maintenance choice for British landscapes looking for both impact and resilience.

Planting and care

Choose a position in full sun. Keep the soil moist while allowing excess water to drain freely.

Water thoroughly after planting and check soil moisture regularly during establishment, particularly in dry or windy weather. Keep competing weeds clear and avoid piling mulch against stems.

What you’ll receive

Supplied according to the option you select for this product.

Stem Girth/Height: as selected when ordering.
Root Type: as selected when ordering.

Delivery and unpacking

On arrival, carefully remove outer packaging and check the plants against your order. Handle plants by their pot or root ball where possible, rather than pulling on stems or branches.

Check root moisture and water if needed. Until planting, keep the plants upright in a sheltered position and prevent roots from drying out. If supplied bare-root, keep the roots covered and moist and plant promptly when conditions allow.

Larger plants and root balls can be heavy. Arrange suitable help and equipment for safe unloading and positioning.

Delivery arrangements and any charges are those confirmed for your order.

Important information

Japanese zelkova is not usually classed as a poisonous garden tree. Leaves, twigs and seeds should still not be eaten by children or pets. Remove pruning waste and loose debris after maintenance.
