Full Description

Taxus baccata, or English Yew, is a slow-growing, dense evergreen shrub perfect for creating formal hedges, topiary, or privacy screens. Its rich green foliage offers year-round coverage, and its ability to thrive in a range of soil types and light conditions makes it highly versatile. This hardy shrub provides shelter for wildlife and is a timeless choice for both traditional and modern garden designs.

Choosing this plant for your space

Start by measuring the length of the proposed hedge and the space available on either side. Consider how the hedge will sit alongside boundaries and other plants, then choose a starting size for the layout.

Position and soil

This plant is listed for sunny or shaded positions. Use well-drained soil that allows excess water to drain away.

Choosing your size

The option you select determines the height and root type supplied. Use the listed measurements to plan the quantity and spacing for your scheme before ordering.

Planting and care

Choose a position in sun or shade. Keep the soil moist while allowing excess water to drain freely.

Water thoroughly after planting and check soil moisture regularly during establishment, particularly in dry or windy weather. Keep competing weeds clear and avoid piling mulch against stems.

Check support ties as the plant grows. Maintain the supplied shape with pruning appropriate to the species, taking care not to remove more old wood than that species can regenerate.

What you’ll receive

Supplied according to the option you select for this product.

Height: as selected when ordering.
Root Type: as selected when ordering.

Delivery and unpacking

On arrival, carefully remove outer packaging and check the plants against your order. Handle plants by their pot or root ball where possible, rather than pulling on stems or branches.

Check root moisture and water if needed. Until planting, keep the plants upright in a sheltered position and prevent roots from drying out. If supplied bare-root, keep the roots covered and moist and plant promptly when conditions allow.

Delivery arrangements and any charges are those confirmed for your order.

Important information

Yew is highly poisonous if eaten, including dried clippings. Keep all parts and pruning waste away from children, pets and livestock; the red fleshy covering does not make the seed inside safe. Treat suspected ingestion as an emergency.

Red berry-like arils develop on female plants only; fruiting is not guaranteed for each plant.
