Features of Cornus Mas

Cornus mas, also known as Cornelian Cherry Dogwood, is celebrated for its early spring blooms and glossy, deep green foliage. The small, bright yellow flowers appear in late winter or early spring, followed by cherry-like red fruits that ripen in autumn. These fruits add a stunning seasonal interest while also attracting birds and wildlife. The dense foliage offers an excellent privacy screen and is ideal for creating natural boundaries in gardens.

Benefits for Nature

Beyond its beauty, Cornus mas supports local biodiversity. The early blossoms provide much-needed nectar for pollinators, while the fruits serve as food for birds. By incorporating Cornelian Cherry Dogwood into your landscape, you actively contribute to a healthier ecosystem, supporting wildlife year-round.

The uniform, mature appearance of our instant hedging units offers a polished, established look upon installation, transforming your garden instantly.

Preferred Conditions

Cornus mas thrives in well-drained soil and adapts well to different soil types, from clay to sandy soils. Although it prefers full sun to partial shade, it remains resilient in various weather conditions. Regular watering during establishment helps ensure its success, and once established, this hardy shrub is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal care.

Fun Fact

The Cornelian Cherry has been cultivated for centuries across Europe and is particularly prized for its edible fruits, which can be used in jams and preserves. The fruits have a tart flavour, similar to cranberries.

Water thoroughly after planting and check soil moisture regularly during establishment, particularly in dry or windy weather. Keep competing weeds clear and avoid piling mulch against stems.

Check support ties as the plant grows. Maintain the supplied shape with pruning appropriate to the species, taking care not to remove more old wood than that species can regenerate.

Supplied according to the option you select for this product.

Height: 200cm.

On arrival, carefully remove outer packaging and check the plants against your order. Handle plants by their pot or root ball where possible, rather than pulling on stems or branches.

Check root moisture and water if needed. Until planting, keep the plants upright in a sheltered position and prevent roots from drying out. If supplied bare-root, keep the roots covered and moist and plant promptly when conditions allow.
