Features of Photinia Red Robin

Photinia × fraseri 'Red Robin' is an evergreen shrub renowned for its brilliant red new growth, which gradually matures to a glossy deep green. This continuous color change creates striking contrast and adds year-round interest. In spring, the plant may produce clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that further enhance its ornamental value. Its dense foliage and rapid growth rate make it ideal for instant screening, soundproofing, and windbreaks.

Benefits for Nature

The dense leaves of Photinia Red Robin provide excellent shelter for birds, while the seasonal flowers attract pollinators like bees. The plant's ability to thrive in urban environments also helps improve local air quality by trapping dust and particulates on its large leaves, making it a practical choice for city gardens.

Landscaping and Design Appeal

These hedging screens are perfect for a range of garden styles, whether used as a formal hedge or an informal barrier. The striking red foliage adds a pop of color, making it suitable for contemporary landscapes, while its dense growth allows it to fit well in traditional settings. With its upright form and ability to maintain color in different conditions, Photinia Red Robin suits both small urban gardens and large rural properties.

Preferred Conditions

Photinia Red Robin thrives in well-drained soil, with a preference for loam, chalk, or sandy types. It performs well in full sun to partial shade, needing at least 6 hours of sunlight for optimal color development. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and stimulates the flushes of vibrant red foliage. While it is hardy in most regions of the UK, it benefits from shelter in particularly windy or exposed sites.

Fun Fact

The name "Red Robin" originates from the bird's association with vibrant red color, reflecting the shrub's bright new foliage. Frequent trimming encourages a second flush of red leaves, allowing gardeners to enjoy this striking feature for extended periods.

Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Keep the soil moist while allowing excess water to drain freely.

Water thoroughly after planting and check soil moisture regularly during establishment, particularly in dry or windy weather. Keep competing weeds clear and avoid piling mulch against stems.

Check support ties as the plant grows. Maintain the supplied shape with pruning appropriate to the species, taking care not to remove more old wood than that species can regenerate.

Supplied according to the option you select for this product.

Height & Width: as selected when ordering.

On arrival, carefully remove outer packaging and check the plants against your order. Handle plants by their pot or root ball where possible, rather than pulling on stems or branches.

Check root moisture and water if needed. Until planting, keep the plants upright in a sheltered position and prevent roots from drying out. If supplied bare-root, keep the roots covered and moist and plant promptly when conditions allow.
