Full Description

Red Maple (Acer rubrum) is a bold, fast-growing deciduous tree native to North America, admired for its brilliant scarlet-red autumn foliage and smooth grey bark. As a full standard tree , it features a tall, clear stem topped by a dense, rounded crown β€” ideal for adding vibrant seasonal interest, shade, and structure to large gardens, parks, or avenues. With excellent adaptability to wet soils, urban conditions, and changing climates, it’s a striking yet practical choice for landscape designers and homeowners alike.

Choosing this plant for your space

The full standard form places the crown above a clear stem. Allow space for the crown as well as the trunk, especially beside paths, boundaries or a repeated avenue of trees.

Position and soil

Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Well-drained soil is suitable, including soil that retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain away.

Choosing your size

The option you select determines the stem girth/height and root type supplied. Use the listed measurements to plan the quantity and spacing for your scheme before ordering.

Planting and care

Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Moisture-retentive soil is suitable; do not assume this also means the plant can tolerate prolonged flooding.

Water thoroughly after planting and check soil moisture regularly during establishment, particularly in dry or windy weather. Keep competing weeds clear and avoid piling mulch against stems.

What you’ll receive

Supplied according to the option you select for this product.

Stem Girth/Height: as selected when ordering.
Root Type: as selected when ordering.

Delivery and unpacking

On arrival, carefully remove outer packaging and check the plants against your order. Handle plants by their pot or root ball where possible, rather than pulling on stems or branches.

Check root moisture and water if needed. Until planting, keep the plants upright in a sheltered position and prevent roots from drying out. If supplied bare-root, keep the roots covered and moist and plant promptly when conditions allow.

Larger plants and root balls can be heavy. Arrange suitable help and equipment for safe unloading and positioning.

Delivery arrangements and any charges are those confirmed for your order.

Important information

Red maple is dangerous to horses: wilted or dried leaves can cause life-threatening poisoning. Keep fallen leaves and cut branches out of paddocks and feed.
