Fruit & Nut Hedging is a traditional native hedgerow mix selected for its edible fruits and nuts, combining productive hedging with strong biodiversity and countryside character. This pack is ideal for rural boundaries, wildlife corridors, and environmental planting schemes where a working hedgerow is desired.

The combination of species creates a mixed native hedge that flowers in spring and produces usable fruit and nuts later in the season. All plants included are long-established hedgerow species commonly found in the UK countryside, making this pack suitable for both practical land management and environmental stewardship. Unlike orchard planting, this mix focuses on wild and native fruiting species that naturally integrate into hedgerows. It provides food for wildlife while also offering traditionally foraged produce, without relying on grafted or ornamental fruit trees.   Varieties included – equal split (25% each): Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) A native hedgerow tree valued for its spring blossom and small, acidic fruit. Crab apples are traditionally used for jellies, preserves, and cider making, and provide an important food source for wildlife. Elder (Sambucus nigra) Provides fast early establishment and seasonal interest. Its flowers and berries are widely used in traditional cordials, syrups, and preserves, while also supporting birds and pollinators. Hazel (Corylus avellana) A cornerstone of traditional hedging, hazel contributes long-term structure and produces edible nuts in autumn. It responds well to trimming and coppicing, making it well suited to managed hedgerows. Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) Adds density and reinforcement to the hedge while producing sloes later in the year. Its early spring flowers support pollinators, and its fruit is traditionally used in preserves and flavouring.   Countryside Stewardship BN7 & BN11 All species within this pack meet the published planting specification for Countryside Stewardship BN7 (Gapping-up) and BN11 (New Hedging). When planted as a mixed native hedge using appropriate spacing and protection, this combination aligns with traditional countryside hedgerow character expected under grant schemes. Grant eligibility applies specifically to the 30–50cm and 50–70cm bare-root options. Larger sizes, pot-grown plants, or alternative root formats fall outside standard grant specifications and should be treated as non-grant planting. This pack is well suited to land managers, estates, and gardeners looking to establish a productive native hedge that supports wildlife, traditional foraging, and long-term countryside management.
Planting and care

Choose a position in full sun. Keep the soil moist while allowing excess water to drain freely.

Water thoroughly after planting and check soil moisture regularly during establishment, particularly in dry or windy weather. Keep competing weeds clear and avoid piling mulch against stems.

Check the individual plants in the pack before positioning them. Match pruning and any winter protection to each supplied species; use the full plant list and substitution notes on this page.

Delivery and unpacking

On arrival, carefully remove outer packaging and check the plants against your order. Handle plants by their pot or root ball where possible, rather than pulling on stems or branches.

Check root moisture and water if needed. Until planting, keep the plants upright in a sheltered position and prevent roots from drying out. If supplied bare-root, keep the roots covered and moist and plant promptly when conditions allow.

Delivery arrangements and any charges are those confirmed for your order.

Important information

This fruit-and-nut hedge includes blackthorn: its ripe fruit flesh can be used for food, but leaves and chewed or crushed stones are unsuitable for consumption. Apple seeds and raw elder plant material also need care. Use only correctly identified edible parts with appropriate preparation, and keep hedge clippings out of animal feed.

Hardiness is a conservative estimate for the whole mix (H6), based on its least cold-hardy listed plant. Individual plants may be hardier; site, drainage and establishment affect winter survival.
