bee-friendly-hedging-pack
Bee Friendly Hedging Pack
Bee Friendly Hedging – A native hedgerow mix selected to provide nectar and pollen across a long flowering season, supporting bees and pollinators in rural and countryside planting schemes.

Equal split (16.6% each):
Hawthorn ( Crataegus monogyna ), Blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa ), Dog Rose ( Rosa canina ), Guelder Rose ( Viburnum opulus ), European Spindle ( Euonymus europaeus ), Orange Dogwood ( Cornus sanguinea ).

Countryside Stewardship:
Suitable for BN7 & BN11 claims when selecting the 30–50cm or 50–70cm bare-root options.

Bee Friendly Hedging is a native hedgerow mix designed to support bees and pollinators throughout the growing season. This pack focuses on long and overlapping flowering periods, providing reliable nectar and pollen from early spring through to summer while still forming a traditional countryside hedge.

The combination of species avoids a short, single flowering window by blending early, mid, and later-season plants. This helps sustain pollinators over a longer period and makes the hedge particularly valuable in rural landscapes, field margins, and environmental planting schemes where biodiversity is a priority.

Varieties included – equal split (16.6% each):

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) provides a major nectar source in mid-spring and forms the structural backbone of the hedge. Its abundant blossom is highly attractive to bees, while its dense growth habit helps the hedge knit together naturally over time.

Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) flowers very early in the season, often before leaves appear, making it one of the most important early food sources for bees emerging from winter. It also contributes density and reinforcement at the base of the hedge.

Dog Rose (Rosa canina) produces open, accessible flowers that are ideal for a wide range of pollinators. Its scrambling habit allows it to weave through the hedge, increasing flower density and extending nectar availability later into the season.

Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus) extends the flowering period into late spring and early summer. Its flat flower heads are easily accessed by bees, helping to bridge the gap between early and later-flowering species within the mix.

European Spindle (Euonymus europaeus) adds diversity and resilience to the hedge. Although more subtle in flower, it contributes to the overall pollinator value and strengthens the traditional mixed-hedge structure expected in countryside planting.

Orange Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) supports bees during late spring and early summer and helps fill space within the hedge. Its vigorous, regenerative growth encourages a full, layered structure while adding seasonal interest.

Countryside Stewardship BN7 & BN11

All species within this pack meet the published planting specification for Countryside Stewardship BN7 (Gapping-up) and BN11 (New Hedging). When planted as a mixed native hedge using appropriate spacing and protection, this combination aligns with the traditional hedgerow character expected by inspectors.

Grant eligibility applies specifically to the 30–50cm and 50–70cm bare-root options. Larger sizes, pot-grown plants, or alternative root formats fall outside standard grant specifications and should be treated as non-grant planting.

This pack is well suited to land managers, estates, and gardeners looking to enhance pollinator habitat while maintaining a compliant, practical native hedge suitable for long-term management.
