Viburnum Tinus Hedging – Viburnum Tinus ‘Eve Price’

Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ is a popular evergreen shrub often used for hedging in UK gardens. It’s loved for its prolonged flowering period, attractive dark green foliage, and robust nature.

Description and Characteristics

This cultivar of Viburnum tinus typically grows to a height of 1.5-2.5 metres (5-8 feet) when used for hedging. The dark, glossy green leaves form a dense, compact canopy, providing privacy and year-round interest.

Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ has a moderate growth rate, typically adding 10-20cm (4-8 inches) per year. With optimal conditions, this hardy plant can live for many decades.

Flowering, Fruits, and Reproduction

Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ is known for its long flowering period, often from late autumn through to spring. The flowers emerge as pink buds, opening to display clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers. These flowers are followed by small, dark blue-black berries in spring and summer.

Benefits to Wildlife

The flowers of Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ provide nectar for bees and other pollinators during winter and early spring when food sources are limited. The berries are enjoyed by birds and small mammals, and the dense foliage provides shelter for birds and insects.

Ideal for British Gardens

Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ is a great choice for British gardens for a variety of reasons. It is extremely hardy, tolerating coastal conditions, frost, and a variety of soil types. Its dense, evergreen nature makes it perfect for privacy screens or windbreaks, and it thrives in both full sun and partial shade.

Moreover, its extended flowering period brightens up the garden during the gloomier months, providing colour and fragrance when many other plants are dormant.

Distribution in the UK

While not native to the UK, Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ is widely grown in gardens across the country due to its hardiness and aesthetic appeal.

In summary, Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’, with its lengthy flowering period, evergreen nature, and wildlife benefits, is a splendid choice for British garden designs. Whether you’re creating a sturdy hedge, a wildlife-friendly garden, or simply want a plant that offers year-round interest, this cultivar of Viburnum tinus won’t disappoint.
