Rowan Hedging – Sorbus Aucuparia

Sorbus aucuparia, also known as the Rowan or Mountain Ash, is a native UK tree often used for hedging. It is appreciated for its stunning clusters of orange-red berries, feathery leaves, and impressive autumn colouration.

Description and Characteristics

Rowan trees typically grow to a height of 6-15 metres (20-50 feet) when used for hedging. The tree’s compound leaves, composed of numerous leaflets, provide a feathery appearance and turn vibrant shades of orange and red in the autumn.

The Rowan has a moderate to fast growth rate, usually adding 30-60cm (1-2 feet) per year. Its lifespan averages between 50 and 200 years, depending on conditions.

Flowering, Fruits, and Reproduction

In May and June, the Rowan produces clusters of creamy-white flowers, attracting a variety of pollinators. By late summer, these flowers give way to vibrant orange-red berries, which persist on the tree into the winter months.

Benefits to Wildlife

The Rowan tree is a valuable source of food and habitat for wildlife. Its flowers attract bees and other pollinators, while the berries are a favoured food source for birds and small mammals. The tree also provides nesting sites for a variety of bird species.

Ideal for British Gardens

The Rowan tree is a great addition to British gardens for its aesthetic and ecological benefits. It thrives in a wide range of soil types and conditions, though it prefers well-drained soils. Its small stature and non-invasive root system make it an excellent choice for smaller gardens.

As a hedge, Rowan trees provide privacy and a windbreak, while their vibrant autumn colours and attractive berries add seasonal interest.

Distribution in the UK

As a native tree, the Rowan is widely distributed throughout the UK. It can be found growing wild in woodlands and on hillsides, and is commonly cultivated in gardens and parks for its ornamental value.

In summary, Sorbus aucuparia, with its beautiful berries, stunning autumn colours, and wildlife benefits, is an excellent choice for British garden designs. Whether you’re creating an attractive hedge, a wildlife-friendly garden, or simply want a tree that provides year-round interest, the Rowan tree is a standout choice.
