River Birch – Betula nigra

River birch, otherwise known as Betula nigra, is a medium-sized deciduous tree. It is as great as any other type of birch but has that added tolerance for very wet soil types. Its most distinctive feature is the bark, as it peels away in thin layers, creating a range of colours from white to salmon-pink and reddish-brown.

River birch, otherwise known as Betula nigra, is a deciduous tree, native to the eastern part of the United States. Commonly found along the banks of rivers and streams, this type of tree is more tolerant of wet soil types.
The river birch is a medium-sized tree that can grow up to 32 meters (90 feet) tall. Its most distinctive feature is the bark, as it peels away in thin layers, creating a range of colours from white to salmon-pink and reddish-brown. This gives the tree a beautiful and eye-catching appearance, unlike any other.

The leaves of river birch are dark green and triangular with a pointed tip. They turn a vibrant yellow colour in autumn, creating a stunning display of colour. In spring, river birch produces small, greenish-brown flowers that attract bees and other pollinators.

River birch trees are known for their ability to tolerate wet soil conditions and can thrive in areas where other trees may struggle. They are also resistant to many pests and diseases. River birch is a popular choice amongst those wanting a relatively low-maintenance tree that can provide a focal point for their garden.
