Pyracantha, commonly known as Firethorn is the best-known hedging option for both its distinct berries coming in three colours, but also its thorny stems, making the Pyracantha a very popular hedging plant variety.

The Pyracantha, unlike many other thorny hedge varieties is an evergreen, this makes it a very strong contender for a privacy hedge. Not only does it offer year-round foliage, but its thorny stems are sure to keep away unwanted visitors.

The Pyracantha is also popular amongst wildlife due to its flowers and berries making it a greatly beneficial hedge to nature in Britain.

The Pyracantha varieties can be planted alone with one colour or mixed using multiple colours for the ultimate display, they can also be planted alongside other thorny varieties like hawthorn and Blackthorn to form a strong predator proof hedge but with more biodiversity.

The recommended planting density varies depending on the height of the plants you buy for example:

Small – 15-90cm: It is recommended that you plant 3-5 plants per meter

Medium – 90-150cm: It is recommended that you plant 2-3 plants per meter

Large – 150-300cm: It is recommended that you plant 1-2 plants per meter
