Description
Cortaderia selloana ‘Pumila’ is a dwarf variety of pampas grass offering the impressive flower plumes of the species in a more compact and manageable form. It forms tidy, evergreen to semi-evergreen clumps of narrow, arching green leaves, topped in late summer by tall, feathery plumes of creamy-white flowers. These plumes persist through autumn and winter, adding structure, movement, and visual interest even in the dormant season.
Growth & Habit
A dense, clump-forming perennial grass reaching around 1.2–1.5 m in height when in flower, and approximately 90 cm in width. Its tidy habit makes it suitable for smaller gardens, courtyards, or as a feature in mixed borders. The strong vertical flower stems create striking contrast against other plants.
Conditions
- Position: Full sun; tolerates exposed and coastal positions
- Soil: Moist but well-drained; adapts to most soil types including loam and sandy soils
- Aspect: Prefers open sites with good airflow and sunlight
- Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK (H6–H7)
Seasonal Interest
Flower plumes appear from late summer to autumn, providing long-lasting display. The foliage remains attractive for much of the year, while the dried plumes offer structure and movement through winter. Suitable for cutting and use in dried floral arrangements.
Maintenance
Cut back old flower stems and remove dead leaves in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Wear gloves when handling, as leaf edges can be sharp. Avoid cutting too early in winter to retain frost protection for the crown. Once established, plants are drought-tolerant and require little maintenance.
Note: ‘Pumila’ provides the ornamental impact of pampas grass in a smaller, more manageable size, ideal for compact gardens or formal planting schemes.
