Portuguese Laurel is often chosen by customers for its ability to grow in all soil types, including chalky soil. The evergreen hedge also offers jagged, darker leaves which make a stunning colour when combined with the lighter new foliage. The hedging’s red berries grown in Autumn emphasize this beauty and can also attract birds into your garden, but please note they are inedible for humans.
This ability to grow in all soil types is supported by the Portuguese Laurel’s ability to grow in both fully sunned areas and fully shaded areas, making it a desirable hedging product due to its durability. However, we do advise customers to offer the hedging some wind protection because windburn could become a threat if you live in a particularly windy and open area.
The Portuguese Laurel (if preferred) will grow quite high but can take years to reach some customer’s desired height so be aware of this. Once it has grown, it will only need to be trimmed once a year to keep it at your preferred height and so it doesn’t require any high maintenance. In one year, the Portuguese Laurel will grow from 20cm – 40cm, depending on factors like watering and nutrients, placing it into the “medium growing hedge” category. The recommended planting density varies depending on the height of the plants you buy. For Example:
