Description
Cortaderia selloana, commonly known as pampas grass, is a striking ornamental grass valued for its tall, feathery plumes and strong architectural form. It forms large, fountain-like clumps of narrow, grey-green leaves that arch gracefully, creating movement and structure throughout the year. In late summer, tall, sturdy stems bear large, silky-white flower plumes that persist well into winter, providing lasting visual interest.
Growth & Habit
This vigorous perennial grass reaches around 2.5–3.0 m in height when in flower and up to 1.5–2.0 m in width. The dense clumps form a dramatic focal point in large borders, lawns, or open landscapes. Once mature, plants develop a strong, upright habit capable of withstanding wind exposure.
Conditions
- Position: Full sun; tolerates exposed and coastal sites
- Soil: Moist but well-drained; thrives in loam, clay, or sandy soils
- Aspect: Prefers open sites with good air movement
- Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK (H6–H7)
Seasonal Interest
Flower plumes emerge from late summer through autumn and remain attractive well into winter. The silvery-white panicles are ideal for fresh or dried flower arrangements. The evergreen to semi-evergreen foliage retains structure in winter, providing visual interest in the dormant garden.
Maintenance
Cut back dead foliage and flower stems in late winter or early spring before new shoots appear. Wear gloves when pruning, as leaf edges are sharp. Avoid cutting too early in winter to protect the crown from frost. Once established, plants are highly drought-tolerant and low maintenance.
Note: This species is ideal for large gardens or open landscapes where space allows. Its impressive plumes and strong silhouette make it a timeless feature plant for structural or naturalistic designs.
