Pacific Sunset Maple, scientifically known as Acer truncatum x A. platanoides ‘Warrenred,’ is a hybrid maple tree renowned for its stunning foliage colour and overall ornamental value. Pacific Sunset Maple is a deciduous tree with a rounded to oval crown and a moderate growth rate. It typically reaches a height of 30 to 40 feet (9 to 12 meters) and has a similar spread. The leaves of Pacific Sunset Maple are deeply lobed and have a unique shape that resembles the classic maple leaf. The foliage emerges in spring with shades of burgundy or reddish-purple, transitioning to a rich green colour during summer. As autumn approaches, the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange, red, and purple, creating a spectacular display of autumn colours.
This type of Maple is well-suited for a variety of environmental conditions. This hybrid maple is adaptable to different soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided the soil is well-drained. It thrives in full sun to partial shade. Pacific Sunset Maple also exhibits good tolerance to urban environments and air pollution, making it an excellent choice for urban and suburban landscapes.
Due to its exceptional foliage colour, Pacific Sunset Maple is highly valued in landscape and garden design. It serves as a focal point and adds visual interest in any setting. Pacific Sunset Maple can also be used in group plantings or as part of mixed borders to create a colourful and dynamic landscape. Its moderate size makes it suitable for residential gardens and larger-scale landscapes.
Pacific Sunset Maple has moderate maintenance requirements. It benefits from regular watering, particularly during dry periods, to maintain healthy growth and foliage colour. Mulching around the base of the tree helps conserve soil moisture and suppress weed growth. Minimal pruning is advised, mainly for removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Regular inspections for common pests and diseases, such as aphids or leaf spot, are recommended to address any issues promptly.
