Description
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’ is a refined ornamental grass known for its narrow, arching foliage and elegant, fountain-like habit. The fine-textured green leaves create soft movement in the landscape and turn rich golden-bronze tones in autumn. In late summer to early autumn, tall stems rise above the foliage, bearing feathery, silvery flower plumes that persist into winter, adding light and texture to borders.
Growth & Habit
A tall, clump-forming perennial grass reaching around 1.5–2.0 m in height when in flower, and approximately 1.2 m in width. Growth is dense yet airy, forming a graceful vase shape that adds vertical interest without appearing heavy. Non-invasive and suitable for both large borders and smaller gardens needing structure and height.
Conditions
- Position: Full sun for best growth and flowering
- Soil: Moist but well-drained; tolerates a wide range of soils except waterlogged conditions
- Aspect: Prefers open, sunny positions; tolerates wind exposure
- Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK (H7)
Seasonal Interest
Foliage emerges fresh green in spring, reaching full height by mid-summer. From August to October, tall plumes of silvery-white flowers rise above the leaves, ageing to soft buff tones. Autumn foliage colour deepens to warm golds and bronzes, remaining ornamental through winter before cutting back in spring.
Maintenance
Cut back dead stems and foliage to the base in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove old flower stalks to maintain a tidy appearance. Divide established clumps every few years in spring to rejuvenate and maintain vigour.
Note: ‘Gracillimus’ is one of the finest forms of *Miscanthus sinensis*, prized for its refined texture, upright habit, and long season of interest — an ideal choice for structural planting or naturalistic garden design.
