Free specialist delivery on qualifying orders: At Harrod Outdoors, we take pride in delivering top-quality plants directly to your doorstep. Our delivery options are tailored to the size and type of plants you order, ensuring they arrive in excellent condition and ready to transform your outdoor space. We offer free specialist delivery on qualifying orders across most of the UK.
Typical lead time – around 3–4 weeks: Most orders take approximately 3–4 weeks to prepare and deliver. This time allows us to carefully source from our extensive range, prepare your plants to our high standards, and ensure everything arrives in peak condition.
Kerbside delivery only: All deliveries are kerbside, meaning your plants will be unloaded at the front of your property (driveway or kerbside) and will not be carried beyond this point. It is your responsibility to move the plants to their final location once delivered.
Safe place required: Please specify a safe place for box, pallet or van deliveries in your order notes. If none is provided, drivers will leave your order where they deem reasonable. Pallet and large tree deliveries require flat, solid access such as tarmac, concrete or brickweave – we cannot deliver onto gravel, shingle, grass or public roads or pathways.
Be available on the day of delivery: It is essential that you are contactable on your provided phone number in case the driver needs to reach you. If access is restricted, no safe place is available, or the driver is instructed not to leave the order, delivery will fail and additional delivery charges will apply or you may need to collect from the local depot.
Plan ahead: We recommend not booking landscapers or gardeners solely based on estimated delivery dates, as occasional delays can occur due to factors beyond our control. For full details, view our Delivery Policy or contact us for advice before ordering.
If you need help selecting the right plants or have specific delivery requirements, our friendly team is here to assist. You can trust us to handle your order with expertise every step of the way. View our Delivery Policy or Contact Us for more information.
Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica ‘Atropurpurea’) is a striking deciduous tree celebrated for its rich, vibrant foliage and majestic form. The oval-shaped leaves emerge in late spring with a coppery-red hue, maturing to deep purple in summer and transitioning to reddish-bronze in autumn. Known for its enduring beauty, this long-lived tree is perfect as a focal point, for formal avenues, or as a natural privacy screen, adding elegance and structure to any landscape.
At maturity, Copper Beech trees can reach heights of 30–35 meters (98–115 feet) with a spread of 15–18 meters (49–59 feet). Their naturally rounded or pyramidal canopy creates a commanding presence, making them ideal for larger gardens, parklands, or lining avenues. Despite their impressive size, Copper Beech can also be pruned and shaped to suit smaller spaces, adding versatility to their appeal.
The ‘Atropurpurea’ variety of Copper Beech stands out for its exceptionally vibrant leaf coloration, which is more intense than that of standard beech trees. Its deep purple foliage provides a dramatic contrast against green landscapes, and its dense canopy offers excellent shade and privacy. The tree’s long lifespan and resilience ensure it remains a standout feature for generations.
Copper Beech thrives in well-drained, fertile soils and adapts well to various soil types, including clay, loam, and chalky soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade, with full sun enhancing its rich leaf coloration. Hardy in the UK climate, it performs well in most regions, but care should be taken to ensure young trees are protected from strong winds during establishment.
Copper Beech is a low-maintenance tree, requiring minimal pruning. Formative pruning can be done to shape young trees or to remove dead or damaged branches. Applying a mulch of well-rotted compost in spring helps retain soil moisture and promotes healthy growth. With proper care, Copper Beech trees can thrive for decades, making them a valuable long-term investment in your garden.
Beyond its ornamental value, Copper Beech supports local wildlife. Its small spring flowers and spiny fruits, known as beechnuts or mast, provide a vital food source for birds and mammals. The dense canopy offers excellent shelter and nesting opportunities, contributing to garden biodiversity. By planting Copper Beech, you can create a thriving ecosystem while enhancing your outdoor space.
