Forsythia

Our Forsythia, also known as Forsythia Spectabilis, is always a popular option with our customers due to its versatility and reliability to add colour and vibrance to any garden. The shrub is easily maintained as it flourishes with golden flowers at the beginning of Spring that are then interchanged with deep green leaves and as Autumn arrives, they shift into a stunning crimson before falling in the Winter for the cycle to begin again, creating a unique display of colours.

Forsythia is placed into the “medium growing hedge” category as typically it can grow between 30-40cm per year depending on factors like watering and nutrient intake. Forsythia (if preferred) can grow tall, up to 3m at a mature height. The shrub is easy to maintain and will not require pruning until 3/4years after planting when the hedging is well established. The shrub is then best pruned once the flowers begin to fade to allow the new growth to come through.  We offer our Forsythia in a variety of sizes from 15cm-200cm, meaning you can choose to affordably grow the hedging or receive it fully-grown and instantly have the benefits of its colours.

The hardiness of the shrub is supported by its ability to thrive in normal, clay and chalk soils in most gardens, including inland, coastal, and exposed sites. The hedging can also be planted in both fully sunned and semi-shaded areas. Due to Forsythia’s bold colouring, the plant can be used by itself as a uniform hedge or combined with other species to bring some colour to any hedging.

The recommended planting density varies depending on the height of the plants you buy. For Example:

Small – 15-90cm: It is recommended that you plant 3-5 plants per meter

Medium – 90-150cm: It is recommended that you plant 2-3 plants per meter

Large – 150-300cm: It is recommended that you plant 1-2 plants per meter
