Field Maple Hedging – Acer Campestre
Acer campestre, also known as Field Maple, is a UK native often used as hedging in gardens and parks. Known for its vibrant autumn hues, adaptability, and wildlife-friendly characteristics, Field Maple is a popular choice for various landscaping projects.
Description and Characteristics
Field Maple typically reaches a height of 4-10 metres (13-33 feet) when cultivated for hedging. The foliage is a beautiful lush green in spring and summer, turning to rich golden-yellow hues in the autumn.
Field Maple is a moderately fast grower, typically adding 30-60cm (1-2 feet) per year. The tree has a long lifespan and can live for hundreds of years in the right conditions.
Flowering, Fruits, and Reproduction
In spring, the Field Maple produces clusters of small, yellow-green flowers. By the autumn, these flowers mature into winged seeds, or ‘samaras’, which helicopter down to the ground and can be carried by the wind for successful dispersal.
Benefits to Wildlife
Field Maple is an excellent tree for supporting biodiversity. Its flowers provide nectar for bees and other pollinating insects in the spring, while the seeds are a food source for birds and small mammals in the autumn. Moreover, the dense foliage provides shelter for various bird species.
Ideal for British Gardens
Field Maple is a versatile hedging plant, thriving in various soil types and conditions. It can withstand both full sun and partial shade. As a hedge, it provides a dense, durable barrier with added aesthetic appeal due to its autumn colour change.
Moreover, the Field Maple is tolerant of pruning and can be maintained at a desired height with ease. It’s also resistant to air pollution, making it a suitable choice for urban and roadside plantings.
Distribution in the UK
As a native species, Field Maple is found across the UK, both in wild settings like woods and hedge rows, and cultivated in parks and gardens.
In summary, Acer campestre, with its stunning autumn hues, wildlife benefits, and adaptability, makes a superb choice for British garden designs. Whether you’re creating a robust hedge, a wildlife-friendly garden, or simply desire a tree that offers seasonal interest, Field Maple stands out as an excellent option.
