Field maple is a wonderful hedge plant option. The Field Maple (Acer campestre) has been used for hedging in the UK dating back thousands of years. It forms a thick dense native hedge row and mixes well with other native hedge plants – you can see the full options in our plant packs under our hedging bundles category.
The field maple flowers just as the new foliage bursts into life, offering colour and vibrancy throughout the garden right through the springtime. The flowers of the Field Maple provide pollen for bees and other pollinators. The seeds provide a snack for other smaller wildlife.
The Field Maple is well suited to all soil types and sun levels, other than full shade. The plants in full shade will grow moderately but not to their full capabilities. The plants will grow up to 60cm annually, much like other native varieties, making them moderately fast growing. The plants can be maintained as a hedge if trimmed regularly (yearly), otherwise they will form tree like structures growing several meters tall.
The recommended planting density varies depending on the height of the plants you buy, for example:
Small – 15-90cm: It is recommended that you plant 3-5 plants per meter
Medium – 90-150cm: It is recommended that you plant 2-3 plants per meter
Large – 150-300cm: It is recommended that you plant 1-2 plants per meter
