English Walnut

English Walnut is a deciduous broadleaf tree brought to the UK by Romans millennia ago due to their popular nuts, still adored today. The Walnut can grow to form a large tree, easily over 35m in height, or can be used to form a native hedgerow.

The Walnut plants have shiny feather like leaves, pinnate alongside 5-9 other oval leaflets. This allows the Walnut tree to have thick dense foliage.

The Walnut can be found anywhere from southeast Europe to southwest China making it very widespread, partly due to its popular nuts being spread by humans and wildlife over thousands of years. The walnut prefers well drained alkaline loamy soil but will usually take well in most other soil types.

The Walnut is very valuable to lots of different types of wildlife like caterpillars, mice and squirrels, making it a popular option as both a shrub and a tree across the UK. It is also very popular in hedging as it offers shelter for small insects in between the vast British countryside.

The Walnut has a moderate growth speed, making it similar to other native varieties, allowing it to be easily maintained as a native hedgerow.

The recommended planting density varies depending on the height of the plants you buy for example:

Small – 15-90cm: It is recommended that you plant 3-5 plants per meter

Medium – 90-150cm: It is recommended that you plant 2-3 plants per meter

Large – 150-300cm: It is recommended that you plant 1-2 plants per meter
