Introducing Acer platanoides ‘Crimson Sentry’, a stunning cultivar of the Norway Maple family that offers unique qualities for British gardens. This upright, columnar tree stands tall, reaching heights of 30 to 40 feet (9 to 12 meters) with a narrow spread of only 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 meters). Its compact size and vertical growth habit make it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or restricted spaces.
What sets Acer platanoides ‘Crimson Sentry’ apart from other maple species is its striking foliage. The leaves emerge in a deep red or burgundy hue in spring, gradually transitioning to a rich green colour as the season progresses. This vibrant display adds a touch of elegance and visual interest to any garden, providing a beautiful backdrop for other plants or a standalone focal point.
Acer platanoides ‘Crimson Sentry’ is particularly well-suited for British gardens for several reasons. Firstly, its compact size and upright form make it ideal for urban settings or gardens with limited space. Secondly, it is known for its tolerance to a variety of soil conditions and can adapt well to the typically moist climate of British gardens. Lastly, its striking foliage provides a year-round visual appeal, especially during spring and summer when the deep red leaves create a bold contrast against the surrounding greenery.
In terms of care, Acer platanoides ‘Crimson Sentry’ requires well-drained soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. Regular watering is necessary during the establishment period, but once established, it can tolerate some drought. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and remove any dead or unwanted branches.
If you’re seeking an eye-catching and compact maple tree for your British garden, Acer platanoides ‘Crimson Sentry’ is an excellent choice. Its striking foliage, adaptability to various soil conditions, and upright growth habit make it a standout addition to any landscape.
