Pleached trees come in a range of stem heights, measured from the base to where the canopy begins, known as the “clear stem.” We offer heights of 100cm, 150cm, 180cm, and 200cm, often categorized as half standard (100-150cm) or full standard (180-200cm). Note that young pleached trees may not have full foliage coverage across the frame.
The stem girth measures the circumference of the tree trunk, providing an indicator of the tree’s thickness and maturity. Generally, a larger stem girth signifies a more mature tree with greater foliage coverage. Young, freshly pleached trees may not fully cover the pleach frame initially, but with proper care, they will thrive in the upcoming growing seasons. When choosing your stem girth, consider this growth potential. Our pleached trees are available in stem girths of 6-8cm, 8-10cm, 10-12cm, 12-14cm, and 14-16cm.
When selecting a pleached tree, the ideal clear stem height and girth depend on your needs. Younger trees with a 6-8cm stem girth are budget-friendly and will fill their frames over time with proper care. For immediate screening, choose a tree with a stem girth of 14cm or more. To screen over a wall or fence, match the clear stem height to the desired coverage.

Planting pleached trees is simple with the right approach. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location with well-draining, nutrient-rich soil.
Dig a hole twice as wide and slightly deeper than the root system, ensuring the tree sits upright with the frame positioned at the correct height.
Backfill with soil, firm gently to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly. Secure the trees with stakes and soft ties to maintain stability, and apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
To protect your freshly planted pleached trees from strong winds and ensure they grow evenly, secure them with bamboo supports using zip-ties. Use long pieces of bamboo to connect the frames of adjacent trees, creating a temporary trellis-like structure. A single central bamboo pole running horizontally across all the trees is usually enough to provide stability and alignment.
Regular watering and light pruning will help your pleached tree establish and thrive, making them form into a beautiful privacy screen for many years to come.

Free specialist delivery on qualifying orders: At Harrod Outdoors, we take pride in delivering top-quality plants directly to your doorstep. Our delivery options are tailored to the size and type of plants you order, ensuring they arrive in excellent condition and ready to transform your outdoor space. We offer free specialist delivery on qualifying orders across most of the UK.
Typical lead time – around 3–4 weeks: Most orders take approximately 3–4 weeks to prepare and deliver. This time allows us to carefully source from our extensive range, prepare your plants to our high standards, and ensure everything arrives in peak condition.
Kerbside delivery only: All deliveries are kerbside, meaning your plants will be unloaded at the front of your property (driveway or kerbside) and will not be carried beyond this point. It is your responsibility to move the plants to their final location once delivered.
Safe place required: Please specify a safe place for box, pallet or van deliveries in your order notes. If none is provided, drivers will leave your order where they deem reasonable. Pallet and large tree deliveries require flat, solid access such as tarmac, concrete or brickweave – we cannot deliver onto gravel, shingle, grass or public roads or pathways.
Be available on the day of delivery: It is essential that you are contactable on your provided phone number in case the driver needs to reach you. If access is restricted, no safe place is available, or the driver is instructed not to leave the order, delivery will fail and additional delivery charges will apply or you may need to collect from the local depot.
