Crab Apple

Crab apple has been used as hedging and ornamental trees for thousands of years, alongside other native varieties like Hawthorn and Blackthorn. This is due to its beautiful flowers, dense foliage, natural thick growing structure and not to forget its small fruits known as a forager’s delight.

The Crab apple is a relation to the common cultivated apple, alongside around 6,000 other varieties. The Crab-apple can live up to 100 years old and grow upwards of 10m tall.

In a hedgerow the Crab apple stands out due to its sweetly scented white and red blossoms, usually saturated by pollinating bees and other insects. The Crab apple is also always recognized when it forms its unique golden green fruits around 3-5cm across. The small apple fruits are very popular amongst birds and mammals, which eat the fruits and subsequently disperse the seeds around allowing new plants to pop up everywhere.

Our Crab-apple can be planted in a single hedgerow or as a part of a mixed native hedge bundle. The crab apple is deciduous like many other native hedge varieties.

The recommended planting density varies depending on the height of the plants you buy for example:

Small – 15-90cm: It is recommended that you plant 3-5 plants per meter

Medium – 90-150cm: It is recommended that you plant 2-3 plants per meter

Large – 150-300cm: It is recommended that you plant 1-2 plants per meter
