Common Hazel
Our Common Hazel, also regarded as Corylus Avellana, is a staple in UK gardens and woodlands. Hazel is always a very popular option for those of our eco-conscious customers who are looking to increase wildlife activity in their gardens as the tree bears elongated, yellow catkins amongst the green foliage in the Spring that fade into light browns at the end of Summer, creating the well-known hazelnut. The hazelnuts are not only popular with us, as the creatures of your garden will love them too, like grey squirrels and smaller mammals who like to hide the hazelnuts into bird nests or burrows.
The Common Hazel is placed into the “medium growing hedge” category as typically it can grow between 40-60cm per year depending on factors like watering and nutrient intake. Common Hazel (if preferred) can grow tall, up to 12m at a mature height although it easily maintained as a hedge at 1-4m. The shrub is easy to maintain and may only require coppicing every few years to trim some stems to allow for new growth. We offer our Common Hazel in a variety of sizes from 15cm-200cm, meaning you can choose to affordably grow the hedging or receive it fully-grown and instantly have the benefits of its colours and wildlife-attraction.
The Common Hazel is a hardy shrub that is well-accustomed to UK weather conditions and so will thrive in both shaded, windy, and exposed areas and so is a great option for all gardens seeking wind or sound protection. The hardy hedging will also adapt well to most soil types and can be grown on its own to create a uniform hedge or can be mixed with other Native Hedging plants to create a unique aesthetic for your garden.
The recommended planting density varies depending on the height of the plants you buy. For Example:
Small – 15-90cm: It is recommended that you plant 3-5 plants per meter
Medium – 90-150cm: It is recommended that you plant 2-3 plants per meter
Large – 150-300cm: It is recommended that you plant 1-2 plants per meter
