Cleveland Maple – Acer Platanoides Cleveland

Cleveland Maple, often chosen as a heritage tree to be planted for future generations due to its long-life span.

Cleveland Maple, scientifically known as Acer platanoides ‘Cleveland,’ is a cultivar of the Norway Maple species. It is a popular tree chosen for its attractive features and adaptability to urban environments. These trees are medium-sized and deciduous in nature, often reaching a height of 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 meters) a spread of about 30 to 40 feet (9 to 12 meters). Once established Cleveland maple have a rounded to oval crown with dense foliage that provides shade. The leaves are medium to dark green and palmately lobed with five lobes. In the fall, the foliage transforms into vibrant shades of golden-yellow to orange, creating a beautiful display.
Cleveland Maple trees are known for their adaptability to various environmental conditions. Withstanding even the harshest of European winters, tolerating temperature drops of over -20 Degree Celsius. These trees thrive in full sun to partial shade but can tolerate a range of light conditions. They are adaptable to different soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided that the soil is well-drained. Cleveland Maples also exhibit good tolerance to urban pollution and are frequently used in city landscapes.
Cleveland Maple trees are relatively low maintenance, requiring minimal care. They have moderate water needs and should be watered regularly during dry periods, especially during their establishment phase. Mulching around the base of the tree helps retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth. Pruning is typically limited to removing dead or damaged branches and maintaining a balanced form. It is best to prune these trees during the dormant season in late winter or early spring to minimize stress and maximize regrowth.
