Description
Blackthorn
Our Blackthorn, also labelled as Prunus Spinosa, is a densely branched shrub with stunning black-purple twigs and deep green, toothed leaves that mix together in a unique blend of colours. This hedging makes a perfect habitat, like most native hedging plants, for British wildlife to build nests for much needed protection and so is always popular with our eco-conscious customers. The shrub will also bear pretty, white flowers alongside dark fruits to again give your garden a great depth of colour.
Blackthorn is placed into the “medium growing hedge” category as typically it can grow between 40-60cm per year depending on factors like watering and nutrient intake. Blackthorn (if preferred) can grow tall, up to 5m at a mature height and will only need to be pruned twice a year in Winter and Springtime, avoiding the nesting months to ensure any wildlife in the hedging remains safe. We offer our Blackthorn in a variety of sizes from 15cm-200cm, meaning you can choose to affordably grow the hedging or receive it fully-grown and instantly have the benefits of its colours and wildlife-attraction.
Due to Blackthorn being a native hedging, the plant will thrive in most British gardens as it is already accustomed to the British Climate. This means the shrub will grow in most soil types providing they are well-drained and will not become waterlogged. Blackthorn is also very hardy and is able to tolerate both colder weather and stronger winds very well, whilst also growing well in full-sunned areas. In November, the plant bears its dark fruits known as ‘Sloes’ that can also be used to make Sloe Gin!
The recommended planting density varies depending on the height of the plants you buy. For Example:
Small – 15-90cm: It is recommended that you plant 3-5 plants per meter
Medium – 90-150cm: It is recommended that you plant 2-3 plants per meter
Large – 150-300cm: It is recommended that you plant 1-2 plants per meter
