Black Locust is a large fast growing tree variety native to North America. Introduced in the 17th century the Black Locust is already found across Europe. The Tree is now becoming increasingly popular for landscaping and garden design due to its unique foliage and hardy tolerance. The black locust plants can also be used as a part of a hedge, they just need to be maintained at a lower height.
The Black Locust has a vibrant yellow/green foliage much more open are airy compared to other common tree varieties offering partial shade opposed to full shade. It’s unique foliage and thorny stem makes it easily noticeable compared to other trees. The vibrant foliage comes to leaf in early spring filled with vibrancy alongside white flowers and the leaves eventually fall off in Autumn ready for winter.
The Black Locust Tree naturally grows into an upright tree form and requires very little maintenance to keep its upright lollipop appearance, this adds to its popularity even further. The trees can eventually grow over 10m tall. The trees thrive in all different soil types but make sure that the soil is not water-logged as this can cause the plant to rot and die.
The recommended planting density varies depending on the height of the plants you buy for example:
Small – 15-90cm: It is recommended that you plant 3-5 plants per meter
Medium – 90-150cm: It is recommended that you plant 2-3 plants per meter
Large – 150-300cm: It is recommended that you plant 1-2 plants per meter
