The Benkomasaki Spindle Hedge, scientifically recognised as Euonymus Japonicus ‘Benkomasaki Erecta’, is a sublime variety that brings together functionality and aesthetic appeal in an extraordinary manner, making it an attractive hedging choice.

The allure of the ‘Benkomasaki Erecta’ lies in its distinctive structure and foliage. Unlike its sprawling cousins, this Euonymus variant grows tall and upright, earning it the ‘Erecta’ epithet. Its columnar growth habit makes it an excellent choice for creating privacy screens or defining garden boundaries. What’s more, it dons shiny, deep green leaves throughout the year, offering a lush, evergreen backdrop that remains vibrant across all seasons.

When pitted against other hedging options, the ‘Benkomasaki Erecta’ stands tall, quite literally. Its unique vertical growth sets it apart, providing a visually appealing alternative to the more traditional spread-out hedging. While many hedges demand substantial horizontal space, this Euonymus species grows upwards, making it a smart choice for gardens where space is at a premium.

‘Benkomasaki Erecta’ is known for its robustness, making it an excellent choice for the diverse conditions across the UK. It’s hardy, disease-resistant, and can withstand cold temperatures, quickly recovering from any frost damage. It thrives in various soil types, from clay and sandy to loamy and chalky, and tolerates a range of light conditions, whether it’s full sun or partial shade.

Furthermore, its hardiness extends to its ability to resist wind and tolerate pollution. This makes ‘Benkomasaki Erecta’ a suitable candidate for urban and coastal environments alike. Regardless of where you are in the UK, this Euonymus variant is ready to flourish and add greenery to your surroundings.

However, there are a few aspects to keep in mind when caring for the ‘Benkomasaki Erecta’. Being a fast-growing hedge, it requires consistent pruning to maintain its shape and height. It can occasionally be susceptible to euonymus scale, an insect pest, so regular inspections and suitable treatments should be implemented to keep the plant in peak condition.

In summary, the Benkomasaki Spindle Hedge is a standout in the realm of hedging choices, with its unique vertical growth, deep green foliage, and exceptional hardiness. Euonymus Japonicus ‘Benkomasaki Erecta’ not only offers a visually pleasing aesthetic but also a practical solution for those seeking a compact, resilient hedge that fits well in the UK’s varied environments. With its captivating charm and functional appeal, it’s ready to reach new heights in your garden.
