Description
Alder
Naturally you will find Alder plants near areas with lots of water, like ponds, lakes, and streams. Unlike most native plants the Alder, like the Willow loves being in water-logged soil. It helps the trees to grow faster and stronger.
The Alder has seasonal interest with its yellow flowers and cone-like fruits, this makes it popular with British wildlife.
The Alder is more commonly seen on its own as a tree rather than in a hedgerow, but it has lots of great features which makes it a good option to have as a part of a mixed native hedgerow.
The Alder is a great option for planting in areas prone to erosion as it helps soak up lots of water, whilst its roots provide stability to the soil beneath.
The recommended planting density varies depending on the height of the plants you buy for example:
Small – 15-90cm: It is recommended that you plant 3-5 plants per meter
Medium – 90-150cm: It is recommended that you plant 2-3 plants per meter
Large – 150-300cm: It is recommended that you plant 1-2 plants per meter
