The Accolade Cherry Tree, or Prunus ‘Accolade’, is a magnificent sight that embodies the spirit of spring with its delicate, semi-double pink blossoms. These flowering cherry trees are a hybrid cross between Prunus sargentii and Prunus subhirtella, delivering a spectacular ornamental display that’s a feast for the eyes.

Accolade Cherry Trees stand out in comparison to other cherry trees due to their unique characteristics. They’re a semi-weeping type, their branches gracefully arching, creating an elegant silhouette. This form can reach heights of 8-10m with a spread of 8m in a 20 year period, making them an excellent choice for medium to large gardens.

One of the captivating features of the Accolade Cherry Tree is its early bloom, often in March or April. The masses of soft pink, semi-double blossoms appear before the leaves, covering the bare branches in a profusion of colour. This early bloom is particularly valuable in the UK, as it brings a welcome splash of colour after a long, cold winter.

Furthermore, these trees also have an exceptional tolerance for wind and rain, and they’re relatively resistant to diseases compared to other cherry tree varieties, making them suitable for the British weather. Their small, cherry-like fruits which appear in the autumn are not particularly edible for humans, but they do provide a food source for birds and other wildlife.

Accolade Cherry Trees are a great choice for a British garden design, not only because they provide a magnificent spring spectacle, but also because they’re a valuable component for a wildlife-friendly garden. Their blossoms are a significant early food source for pollinators, especially bees. As a garden feature, they function as a fantastic centrepiece, their semi-weeping form and beautiful blossoms making a dramatic statement in any landscape design. They also work well as avenue trees or in small groupings.

During autumn, the leaves of the Accolade Cherry Tree transform into a fiery display of yellow, orange, and red hues, providing yet another season of visual interest. This colour palette works brilliantly in UK gardens, aligning with the traditional autumnal aesthetic.

Their environmental benefits go beyond their support for wildlife. Like all trees, Accolade Cherry Trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, contributing to the mitigation of climate change. They also help in reducing noise pollution and improving local air quality.

To ensure a thriving Accolade Cherry Tree, it’s essential to plant it in a location with full sun or partial shade, and it’s best grown in well-drained soil. It doesn’t require much pruning, mostly just to remove any dead or diseased wood, and to maintain its shape.

In conclusion, the Accolade Cherry Tree is a garden asset for its aesthetic appeal, its resilience to the British weather, its role in supporting wildlife, and for its environmental benefits. Its breathtaking beauty in the spring, coupled with the fiery display in the autumn, provides year-round interest, making it a splendid addition to any British garden.
